This history details the building of the spur that sent railroad lines to communities west of Concord, New Hampshire during the 19th century, and the engineering and politicking associated with its completion, its use, and its demise in the latter half of the 20th century. A section of the old railroad bed is now The Sugar River Rail Trail, owned and maintained by the State of New Hampshire, running 10 miles between Newport and Claremont, with two of the historic RR Covered Bridges along that route, off Chandlers Mill Rd. in Newport.
