London: WM. S. Orr and Co., 1849. Fine Binding. Very Good Indeed. 7.5" by 5". Hablot K. Brown. A charming two volume set of Charles Lever's 'Confessions of Con. Cregan.' Handsomely bound in half calf. This charming two volume edition of 'Confessions of Con. Cregan: The Irish Gil Blas', was written by Charles Lever and illustrated throughout by Hablot K. Brown. Charles Lever was an Irish author whose novels have been praised for their easy flow and pace. He was born in Dublin, and wrote quite often about Ireland and Irish culture. Hablot Brown was an English artist, and also illustrated books for Charles Dickens and Harrison Ainsworth. Handsomely bound in half calf with marbled covered boards. Externally, smart with minor rubbing and shelf wear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages spotted to the first and last few pages with odd spot throughout. There is a small fold to pages 41 to 63 on the bottom of the fore-margin in volume one. The is a small stain to the bottom of pages 300 and 301 of volume two, though it does not obscure words. Very Good Indeed

Half title in volume 2 only (as described by Sadleir). Illustrated with 28 engraved plates by Phiz and many text illustrations after Phiz. In Volume 2, as noted in Wolff, the plate listed for p. 261, "Con and the Marchesa," appears as frontispiece. Half-bound in green morocco by Stikeman, over marbled paper-covered boards, with matching endpapers, raised bands and gilt decoration at spines, t.e.g. Sun to spines and edges, slight shelfwear to edges. Front hinges tender. Text and illustrations are quite clean. Original front cover and spine bound-in at rear publisher's blanks of Vol. I; (red cloth, with gilt title and decoration to spine, and blind-stamped frames to cover). Very good. (Wolff 4080, Sadleir 1397).
