About This Item

Tight, square spine. Clean, unmarked interior. Some sunning/toning and light edge-wear to the covers. As a young teen, De Quincey fled a Manchester boarding school to tramp around Wales, sleeping in a handmade tent and subsisting on rosehips and blackberries. At the age of 19, neuralgic facial pain drove him to opium use, and his dependency on the substance eventually formed the basis of the two pioneering works of addiction literature included in this volume. Features a unique three-color cover collaboration between mid-century design master George Giusti (whose minimalist designs include editions of John Barth's Chimera, S. J. Perelman's Crazy Like a Fox, Albert Camus's Caligula and 3 Other Plays, and Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh) and illustrator Edward Shenton (known for his contrastingly classical work in first editions of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings's The Yearling, F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tender Is the Night, Ernest Hemingway's Green Hills of Africa, and William Faulkner's The Unvanquished). 233 pp.
