About This Item

London: Jonathon Cape, 1968. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good,/Very Good,. Near fine - a very neat copy of the first UK edition. First printing. Octavo in original brown boards with gilt title and credits to spine, red top edge, 428 pages. A small erasure mark to front free endpaper, very light creasing, discolouration to dustjacket edges. This controversial Pulitzer Prize winning novel was attacked by African-American critics for appropriating the voice the leader of slave rebellion in Virginia in 1831. Despite this, the novel achieved wide critical acclaim for its exploration of the corrupting effects of slavery.
