(USA) No markings, spine very slightly darkened, VG; no Dj as issued in Very Good slipcase covered with blue cloth. 23 x 16 cm, white vellum over boards with gold border, gold floral edge to inside cover edges, top edge gilt, ribbon marker,tipped-in series frontis with another B&W frontis illus, two other tissued protected plates, x, 304pp. Translated by Dora Knowlton Ranous; ;intro by Ranous. This is one of an original set of 16 volumes in the History of Italian Literature series, The Edizione Vaticano, limited to 100 copies. The first volume (A History of Italian Literature) contains the certificate signed by Rossiter Johnson, secretary. Serao was the first woman called to edit an Italian newspaper, Il Corriere di Roma and later Il Giorno. She was nominated for the Nobel Prize six times but never won. This novel was writte in 1885 and explores her characters' lives in 19th century Rome. (2.8 JM HOQ 100/b5. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
