FROM JACKET FLAP: "Man now has it within his power acitvely to collaborate with the evolutionary process and, using the creative power of his mind, guide the human race to the fulfillment of his potential. Can we comprehend the dimensions of the "conscious evolution"? What choices will we make? In this exciting and remarkable book, Jonas Salk defines the meaning of conscious evolution and outlines the new cosmogony that could remedy the present human predicament."
JONAS SALK (1914 - 1995) was an American medical researcher and virologist. He discovered and developed one of the first successful polio vaccines. Salk campaigned for mandatory vaccination, claiming that public health should be considered a "moral commitment." His sole focus had been to develop a safe and effective vaccine as rapidly as possible, with no interest in personal profit. When asked who owned the patent to it, Salk said, "There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?" In 1960, he founded the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, which is today a center for medical and scientific research. The Institute is dedicated not only to experimental biology but to relating biological knowledge to philosophical, psychological, and social questions. Dr. Salk views biology not only as a science but as a basic cultural discipline with unifying potential for the relationships that exist between man and the physical universe, as well as between man and the sciences, arts, and humanities.

He was well-respected for his passion and commitment to improving the lives of those around him and was appointed by President Bill Clinton as a Public Delegate to the U.S. Mission at the United Nations in 1993 and as Chairman of the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars in 1996. ALEXANDER PAPAMARKOU (1930-1998) was a philanthropist and international investment banker whose clients included royalty, industrialists and major institutions.
