Palo Alto, CA Consolidated Freightways, Inc., 1988. Paperback First Edition (1988), unstated. First Edition (1988), unstated. Very Good+ in Wraps: shows indications of very careful use: light wear to extremities, mainly along the outside edge of the front panel; a small rubbed area at the bottom corner of the backstrip; some rubbing to the panels of the wrapper covers; a faint crease near the upper corner of the front panel and this carries through to the first few pages of text; the binding is square and secure; the text is clean. Free of creases to the backstrip. Free of underlining, hi-lighting, notations, or marginalia. Free of any ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. A handsome, copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing mild wear and minor cosmetic flaws. Not far from 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 4to. (11.65 x 9 x 0.7 inches). 229 pages. Foreword by Raymond F. O'Brien. Statement by Judy Kay. Profusely illustrated with duotone photographs and a handful in color. Frontispiece by Ansel Adams (1952) of the coastal road in gelatin silver print. Language: English. Weight: 36.5 ounces. Paperback. This is a truly fabulous collection, beautifully produced in duotone and color; arranged thematically; includes Ansel Adams, Andre Kertesz, Andreas Feininger, Lee Friedlander, Aaron Siskind, Bruce Davidson, Walker Evans, William Klein, and a host of other signficant photographers. Includes also an index of the collection, including paintings, sculpture,s prints and works on paper; a very useful reference and a veritable education in fine photography. Consolidated Freightways, Inc. began acquiring art in 1981, when the corporation moved its headquarters from San Francisco to the Stanford Industrial Park in Palo Alto. Today the collection includes sculpture, paintings and works on paper, but photography is its dominant focus. The photographs span the period from 1929, the year of the company's founding, to the present day. They reflect the corporation's role as a preeminent transportation company and portray the ever-changing American landscape as seen by and large from highway and roads. This catalogue provided an impetus to review the Consolidated Freightways collection and to reflect on the company's original intent of acquiring photographs that document the American landscape. Clearly there are images that, in the strictest sense, record the topography from New York to California. Landscape as a theme has proven to be a fortunate choice; it is narrow enough to keep the collection focused yet expansive enough to allow flexibility. It has become the departure point for an in-depth investigation of land and people. The photographs collected wind their way through the physical and social landscape of the past 50 years. They capture the spirit of specific events, the special moments of people and of place. This catalogue documents acquisitions through march of 1988. It is designed to provide visitors and employees with additional information so they can more fully enjoy the Consolidated Freightways Collection.
