About This Item

Boston, MA Little Brown and Company: Atlantic Monthly Press, 1962. Paperback First Edition Thus (1962); unstated. May be a later printing as there is no explicit statement of First Edition, though there is an "A" prominently on the copyright page. Very Good+: shows very light wear to the extremities; the blue-grey background field of the backstrip is ever so lightly sunned, but the titles thereon remain easily legible; several pages at one spot inadvertently dog-eared in the text; a price has been blocked out at the upper front panel; some toning to the white background field of the rear panel; the binding is square and secure; the text is clean. Free of creases to the panels. Free of any underlining, hi-lighting or marginalia or marks in the text. Free of ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, or labels. A handsome copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing mild wear and several minor cosmetic imperfections.NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. (7.75 x 5 x 1.2 inches). xiii, 513 pages. Language: English. Weight: 17.4 ounces. First Edition Thus (1962); unstated. May be a later printing as there is no explicit statement of First Edition, though there is an "A" prominently placed on the copyright page. Trade Paperback. A Critical Survey of the modern spirit in literature. More than seventy essays, including individual studies ranging from Melville to mid 20th century standouts like Saul Bellow, Norman Mailer, etc. Some of his highly personal, colloquial essays touch on political themes and current events of the 1950s. One piece I especially liked detailed the the crude Victorian editing of Emily Dickinson's manuscripts. Essays were originally published in New Republic, New Leader, Atlantic Monthly, Partisan Review and the like.
