About This Item

JEFFERSON DAVIS (1808-1889). Davis was an American statesman and President of the Confederate States of America. Letter. 2pgs. May 25, 1864. Confederate Executive Mansion, Richmond, Virginia. A contemporary copy of a letter by Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Davis entrusts his beloved cat, Maryland, to the unidentified recipient. “My dear Madam. I received your friendly message through Mr Lelig, who has just arrived from Philadelphia Col L. P. Anderson of the 5th Georgia Cavalry, now stationed here, also assures me of your entire sympathy with our cause. I therefore venture, Madam to entrust to you herewith keeping a favorite cat, the companion of my nightly vigils in the interest of southern independence. Although we still hope to hurl back the northern invades from our gates, the increasing scarcity of provisions compels me reluctantly to part with this cherished animal. Her name is Maryland and I am accustomed to call her My Maryland. I send her by Mr Lelig, who retains to leisure his secret patriotic mission and who will deposit her in the hands of E. S. or M. P. (the initials will be understood by you Madam) to be given into your care. Mrs Davis begs leave to send you her regards and would suggest – since we have discarded conventionalities in this crisis – that a few pots of raspberry jam would be very acceptable to her. When we shall have conquered our independence I trust that I may one day entertain you under my roof and express to you how sincerely I am Madam your friend and admirer Jefferson Davis President C.S.A.”. The letter is in very good condition with a few holes along the edge; they do not impact the text.
