Bologna: Lelio dalla Volpe, 1766. * DSB XIV.589; Riccardi II.654-5: “raro e pregiato” (erroneously calls for only 10 plates); Cicognara 874; Gamba 2508; Vagnetti, pp. 456-57. First edition and internally a fine, untrimmed copy of this general treatise on perspective by the astronomer and mathematician Eustachio Zanotti. “Eustachio Zanotti’s treatise, as would be expected from a scientist of his quality, provides an analytical treatment of the mathematics of perspective at a highly professional level... He is aware that the science of geometrical perspective cannot be regarded as a precise matching of visual experience, and he recommends the avoidance of doctrinaire effects of foreshortening in large scale schemes to be viewed from various angles, but his ultimate recommendation is that the painter can best evoke reality by following the established rules with care and consistency” (Kemp, Science of Art, 141-42).Zanotti (1709-1782) was the son of the painter and Academician Giampietro…

Description:
This collection of original material of Jerome Myers includes two photographs of Jerome Myers, taken by Leo Grubman, one taken in 1910 [when they shared an art gallery and studio] and signed by Leo Grubman, the other taken by Grubman circa 1932. There is a photograph of his wife Ethel (photographer not identified). After his success at the Armory Show in 1911 with the sale of his painting "The Mission Tent" he was able to move into a new studio at the new Carnegie Hall building. There are two warmly personal letters with biographical items of interest plus some artistic representation. The first letter is to his friend Leo Grubman, dated January 21, 1914, and discusses with pride his daughter Virginia's dance recital and his busy schedule. There is a second letter (lacking the first page) of one page signed "Jerome" and circa 1915 of his move to Carmel, New York where he bought 18 acres in a very rustic setting (where he has made a few nice ink sketches along the margins of the letter). A small corner…

Japan: Yokohama Seishi Bunsha, 1895. First Edition. Rare English-language guide to Japanese domestic wares, with 76 fully-illustrated items. Its publication came at a time when Japan was experiencing a dramatic shift from the conservative, isolationist policies of the sh gun-dominated Edo period to the rapid and widespread drive to modernise and engage with the rest of the world that characterizes the Meiji Restoration. This booklet focuses on a traditional domestic interior and features a beautiful double-page plate showing the layout and arrangement of a Japanese period home, showing respective zones for food preparation, cooking and the entertainment of guests. Items specifically illustrated and described include lacquer wares, a charcoal-burning stove, lanterns, wooden buckets and items used in the tea ceremony. A beautiful copy of a scarce work published for the English market. Bibliography: Not in Cordier or Nipponalia.; Rogala Jozef 'A Collector's Guide to Books on Japan in English', 783.…

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
