Original blue cloth with gilt lettering on cover and spine, n original illustrated dustjacket with black lettering. Blue endpapers. Frontispiece. Publisher's device on title page. Geologically these hills form a portion of the great belt of limestone which extends across England from the Dorsetshire coast to Scarborough. All the buildings are of the local limestone; which was practically the only material available. Constructions of the simplest forms were practiced, based on traditions handed down, generation after generation, gradually evolving into a distinct type or style." (Foreword). Contains descriptive list of plates at front, and one page with a publisher's advertising at rear. Block very lightly age-toned, not affecting images. Dustjacket in good, binding in good+, interior in very good condition.
