Quarto (11 5/8 by 8 1/2 inches) viii, 130 pages, 20 color plates ("Drawn from Nature by M. Leveille and Colored . . . Under His Direction"), index, original pebble brown cloth binding, with title and author in gilt, centered on upper cover, and title in gilt on spine.
Very good condition (minimal, and insignificant normal shelf wear on spine, not affecting contents, or plates which are bright and clean; a few old newspaper clippings, and a portrait of Thomas Huxley interleaved, separately, with the contents; two old small rubber stamps: "Library of F. J. Schaufelberger, Fostoria, Ohio . . . " on front fly leaf).
Highly regarded in the medical field, the author lectured at the Cooper Medical College (later to become Stanford University School of Medicine) in San Francisco on his visit to America in 1897.
