About This Item

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1898 . Cloth. Very Good Indeed. 8" by 5.5". Hugh Thomson. With delicate colour illustrations by Hugh Thomson, a truly delightful edition of this popular collection of village sketches. First published in book form in 1853, this episodic work became extremely popular towards the end of the nineteenth century, and follows village life as inspired by the author's time growing up in Knutsford. With beautiful in-text illustrations in colour throughout by Hugh Thomson.Written by Elizabeth Gaskell, an English novelist known for her stark depictions of Victorian society.A lovely little copy of a charming depiction of village life, brought to life by Thomson's delightful illustrations. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally very smart, with just a little bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Gift inscription in pencil to the front endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound; a little strain to the binding at the half title and pages 144-5. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed
