About the book and its Author:
Cesare Lombroso, (1835 - 1909), was an Italian criminologist whose views, though now largely discredited, brought about a shift in criminology from a legalistic preoccupation with crime to a scientific study of criminals.
His final book, Crime: Its Causes and Remedies, appeared in English in 1911. It is, in large part, a response to his critics who questioned his belief that inherited traits were a determining factor in the causes of crime. The book relies on data and statistics to show that Lombroso is taking other factors into consideration (social, economic, etc) in his inquiries into the root causes of crime.
