About This Item
Pennsylvania State Univ Pr, 1996. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. First edition. Hardcover. xxiv+ 280 pp. with index, bibliography. Fine in bright, crisp dust jacket. Scarce. A study of Thomas de Lisle, Bishop of Ely from 1345 to 1361, who was simultaneously the leader of a local gang of thugs and bullies who terrorized both the poor and the rich of East Anglia. The bishop and his crew engaged in arson, kidnapping, extortion, theft and murder, a reign of mayhem that ended in 1356 when they made a disasterous assult on Edward III's cousin Lady de Wake. Using and unusually rich body of primary material, the author looks at the social and economic side of de Lisle's term as bishop.
