These volumes span the period from immediately after the second World War, when Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, through the end of 1952, during his second Premiership. The events encompassed by these years are in many ways no less dramatic than those of the war years - the unraveling of the British Empire, the post-war recovery, the beginning of the Cold War, Soviet acquisition of the atomic bomb and U.S. invention of the hydrogen bomb. The U.S. postwar speeches were published in very small numbers, making jacketed U.S. editions much rarer than their British counterparts. William Dugdale was 17th-century English historian known for his works of antiquity of English aristocracy and monastics. While not his most notable work, 'Troubles in England'
is a treatise written to describe the wars that influenced Europe and England during the 17th-century. Dugdale correlates three wars – English Civil War, Barons' War, and the French Wars of Religion – and how they related to each other. Interestingly, the DNB notes that this work was "written throughout in a strain of animosity to all who took the anti-royalist side." However, this work isnotable for its accuracy.

London, 1837. Addressed to an unidentified recipient, this signed letter concerns the appointment of an officer with hearing loss, which the Duke relates to his own experience of deafness. Like many exposed to the sound of artillery fire, the Duke of Wellington suffered from noise-related hearing loss. Subsequently he underwent a botched treatment which resulted in permanent deafness in one ear. This ALS is dated London, 16 April 1837. This was the year that Queen Victoria ascended the throne, and was written when the Duke was in his late 60s. Expected fold marks. Whole written in brown ink. 2pp. with integral blank leaf. 185 x 118 mm (7¼ by 4¾ inches)

Two Volumes octavo 19th century half calf with 5 faux raised bands gilt and tan title labels (tips slightly rubbed) xxxiv +412pp (ii)+432pp +[208]pp of index for both volumes. Titlepage of first volume is damp marked and the following three leaves of dedication and the last 8 leaves marginally so. The last two leaves also slightly browned but all paper supple and strong. There is sporadic & pale marking with volume 2 having a marginal ink spot to pp311 sl.offset to 310 and marginal damp to approx 10 leaves + the index. Ownership E.Kensington and note to pastedown that it was given my Mrs Bell in remembrance of her husband. *Madan was a loose-living lawyer when he attended a service by John Wesley, this led to his reform and he became a convert and took holy orders serving as chaplain of a Charity - Lock Hospital. Hand-coloured plates including costumes, professions & trades, with children, animals, coaching scene, ships/boats, boxing etc.. 2 VOLUMES gilt tan roan (edges worn/spine of vol.2 lacks top compartment and much of the raised bands of vol.2 are missing their leather covering) All edges marbled. Frontispiece + xc (which incl.titlepage) +72pp Vol.2 frontispiece + v (which includes title) +140pp + [4]pp of publisher's Spanish works. Book plate to pastedown with coat of arms of Earl of Portsmouth. Text in Spanish but plates all captioned only in English and the colouring is original and well done. Both text and plates are in clean condition, no writing no tears and with the tissue guards in place and very minimal foxing to a very few pages. The publisher, Ackermann, lists these books as being sold through his own establishments in Maxico, Columbia, Buenos Aires, Chile, Peru, & Guatemala these volumes were obviously written for the South American trade.

Cambridge: R. Walker & T. James, 1745. Two Volumes, first thus. This is the two volume re-issue of this work by Walker, in 1745. It was longer than the earlier edition (extending to 1234 pages rather than 1109), but it was not issued with the engravings. This copy conforms to ESTC T154531 with pages up to Y4 the same as the earlier issue, those after differing. In this copy, Y4 is not a cancel. Half contemporary leather bindings, with marbled boards (now significantly faded) gilt volume number but no titles to each spine. Leather is a little cracked, but binding is holding well. Vol. 1 has a modern cutting with a portrait of Cromwell pasted to the inside front board. Title page is a little darkened. Rest of the work is in good clean condition, with a few pages a little dirty. To volume II, the rear paste down is covered in pencil page references. The last text page has a repaired tear, with a corner of loss (not affecting text.). (viii) 1-716, 721-1234. pp. 110 by 170mm (4¼ by 6¾ inches).
