On Saturday, 5 December, three days after the publication of the 1987 edition of Crockford's Clerical directory, Dr. Gareth Bennett took his own life. It was the climax of an extraordinary press campaign to discover the anonymous author of the Crockford's Preface, which had contained a severe analysis of the current state of the Anglican Church, and an indictment of its leadership. The press hysteria had been fed by a series of pronouncements on the author's character issued by senior clergy.' .
