About This Item

London: John Murray. Good+ with no dust jacket. 1884. First Edition. Hardcover. In the original publishers' brown cloth-covered boards, with gilt titling to the spine and an heraldic device in gilt to each front board. Some marks to the covers, corners bumped/slightly scraped to some, and the rear board/hinge to Volume 1 has been detached and reglued at some point in the past. Heads and Tails of spines bumped over time and with some loss to the heads of Vols 2 & 3. Overall a Good Sound ORIGINAL set. First Edition. An Heraldic Bookplate to the front pastedowns of each volume = Henry Arthur Clifton. Also a relative's name and date - Eleanor Cecily Clifton 1884 - written in old fading ink to the top of the Title page of each volume. Portrait Frontispiece to Volume 1. Small nibble holes to the very edge of the last page of Volume 2, otherwise internally VG throughout each volume and a near very good copy overall. Vol 1 = (xii) + 434 pp. Vol 2 = (vii) + (1 ) + 423 pp. Vol 3 = (vii) + (1 blank) + 397pp. John Wilson Croker (1780-1857) politician and writer, appointed as Deputy Chief Secretary for Ireland when Sir Arthur Wellesley took command of the Army in Portugal, and subsequently became Secretary to the Admiralty, an important role in wartime. Croker was of course a well connected man and these volumes perhaps most famously provide the source for an account of the only meeting of Nelson and Wellington, etc, etc. This 3 volume set is overweight at 3 Kilos UNpackaged, and, for International customers only, will require extra postage depending on your location. Please check with the seller for postal costs. See Images; Each Volume Large 8vo .
