New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1942. 1st/1st. VG/G. First edition, first printing with Scribner's "A" present on the copyright page and 1942 on the title page. No colophon. According to the "Pittsburgh Series in Bibliography" the Scribner's seal did not appear with the "A" until later printings. The book is square with a tight binding. Slightly bumped corners. Some flaking and fading to the silver spine blocking and light spotting to the top edge. Textblock has no writing, bookplate or marks. Pages lightly tanned. Soiling and tape residue to scenic endpapers. The price-clipped dust jacket is edge worn and chipped at spine and corners (see photos). B&W illustrations by Edward Shenton. This bright copy is protected in a new Brodart Mylar cover.
