The text is illustrated with two inserts, of eight pages each, of historical black-and-white photographs and illustrations. Blue coloured cloth covered boards with gilt coloured embossed author's initials to the front panel and built coloured titles to the back strip. Illustrated dustwrapper with yellow and white coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. Black-and-white photograph of author to the rear panel. The author looks at the bourgeois class in England, Europe and America during the 19th century, and, particularly the aggression that simmered just under the "civilised" façade. This form of belittling, bullying and patronising behaviour to those they considered their inferiors; all the while seeking rationalisations of their behaviour under the banner of "... the hunt for profits from new commercial ventures or for power in the political arena or for dominance over new movements that were bringing women out from domesticity." -- from front fold over panel. Rubbing of the back strip edges and a little to the top book corners and lower book edges. Age toning of the text block edges and pages with a few marks to the text block edges.
