About This Item

London: Macmillan & Co, 1952. 1st. h/b. Very good, 1st edition, unclipped d/j (some chipping and wear, in protective sleeve), red clothobund boards (a little fading at edges), gilt spine titling bright; text block firm and pages unmarked (some light foxing on edges); owners' inscriptions on ffep.. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). This is another book by Sacheverell Sitwell belonging to the series which began with his Dance of the Ouick and the Dead in 1936. It is, in fact, the fifth volume of this series Cupid and the Jacaranda, like its predecessors, ranges the wide field between fact and fiction. Partly, in its beginnings, it is Mr. Sitwell's autobiography in terms of what he has described and seen. An American critic has written of him: ""Perhaps no writer has ever covered a wider range in the arts that make life beautiful. Particularly impressive is the sum and volume of his writings on architecture, painting and sculpture. The Kingdom of the Birds"" which was a memorable episode in his The Hunters and the Hunted. Mr. Sitwell has never trodden the beaten track, and Cupid and the Jacaranda is unlike any other book. It shows him at his best, and it will not fail to find its devotees.
