Two volumes bound in one. xii, 418pp, xii, 420pp; 16 full colour water- colour illustrations, dozens of black and white in-text engravings. Woodcut designs by Harden S Melville and coloured illustrations from drawings by F W Keyl and R Huttula. Half bound in green leather over marbled boards, five spine raised bands and gilt titles and motifs on spine. Gently rubbed spine ends. Corners and board edges quite heavily rubbed and worn. Marbled text block edges. Marbled end papers. Minor foxing to prelim pages and colour plates. Otherwise tight and bright. A heavy volume which will require an additional charge for overseas delivery. 8vo. "the savage considered mentally and morally, his domestic life, his bed, his toilet, his board, van flesh, going to market for a joint of it". The customs of natives of America, Pacific Islands and Africa. Writing of a nature which would not be considered politically correct nowadays.
