About This Item
New York: Boni and Liveright, 1919. First Edition. A series of humorous sketches, including the title essay Twain originally wrote for the Atlantic, "apparently unironic and wisely unsigned, that modestly proposed a change in the suffrage laws. Titled "The Curious Republic of Gondour," the essay argued, in essence, that universal suffrage was fine - but why not allot bonus voting privileges on an escalating scale based on extent of education and property holding" (Powers, Ron. Mark Twain: A Life, p.378). BAL 3527; Smith T-429. First Printing. Octavo (19cm); yellow printed paper-covered boards and white cloth backstrip, with titles stamped in black on spine; dustjacket; x,140,[2]pp. Foxing to upper edge of textblock, some offsetting to pastedowns from binders glue, with some light wear and gentle sunning to spine ends; contents clean; Very Good+. In the original dustjacket, priced $1.25 at mid-spine; gently spine-sunned, lightly edgeworn, with a few small tears and attendant creases, short split to front flap fold, and shallow losses to spine ends and corner-tips, costing some of the lettering at crown; unrestored, Very Good only.
