Cyclorama Of The Battle Of Gettysburg by Philippoteaux, Paul - 1887

Strikingly illustrated souvenir program for the exhibition of the panoramic painting of "The Battle of Gettysburg", showing Union and Confederate soldiers shaking hands in conciliatory fashion beneath dramatically stylized interlocked flags. The Philippoteaux painting depicted Pickett's failed assault, the Confederate attack on Union forces on July 3, 1863. It was a cyclorama, a 360 degree cylindrical painting intended to immerse the viewer in the scene. It is now located at the purpose built museum at Gettysburg. The panoramic painting was originally exhibited in a circular room. In this souvenir program the folding plate has a sketch of the painting in a large circle with a numbered key designed for the exhibition viewer to use viewing the cyclorama. An account of the Battle and Pickett's Charge is included, as well as many advertisements, including one for the Cyclorama "permanently located in Boston, Mass on the Moody and Sankey Tabernacle site, Tremont Street". 8vo, [40]pp, folding panoramic plate, map. Original pictorial paper wrappers. Brown marks on the upper and lower portion of the front wrapper, small chip at lower edge. Six inch closed tear at left side of folding plate. Good condition overall.
