About This Item

S.l., Texas:: [The Company],.. Illustrated with 17 halftones; 16 pp. . 8vo, stiff pictorial wrappers front cover pictorial; back cover with 3 halftones. OCLC shows five Texas holdings (Dallas Public Library; Rice, SMU and UT at Austin and at Arlington—June 1021). An account of two children’s visit to this oil company’s pavilion at the centennial in Dallas during a break in their job at the centennial, performing in Cavalcade described as “a living saga of over four hundred years of Texas history”. Both children wore period costume: Toinette Huffington played Cynthia Ann Parker, who as a young child was abducted by Comanche warriors when they attacked her family’s settlement. She was adopted by a Comanche couple and later married a tribal chief and gave birth to three children; her husband in deference to his affection for her, did not take any other wives. Twenty-four years later she was identified as a white woman and returned to her family with her youngest child. She resisted all attempts to re-assimilate, tried several times to escape back to her family and, after her daughter died of fever, refused to eat and died shortly after her. Jack Van Zandt played John Christopher Columbus Hill a 13-year-old who accompanied his brother and father on the Mier Expedition. He was captured, adopted by the Mexican president Santa Anna, and eventually became a successful engineer in the United States and Mexico. There is a halftone of the two children in front of a cross-section of the types of material found under an oil field; it has the following caption: “Evidently girls can’t understand geology as well as boys can, for here we find John explaining to Cynthia Ann about formations The Humble Oil Company was acquired by Standard Oil Company of New Jersey and is now part of Exxon.
