Francisco Toledo (1532-1596) was born at Cordova, Spain and studied philosophy and theology at Valencia under Domingo Soto and by the age of 23 he was teaching philosophy at Salamanca. He became a Jesuit in 1558 and in 1593 was the first Jesuit to be made a cardinal (by Clement VIII). He was considered one of the most learned men of his time.
