Covers the Sioux uprising of 1862-3 in Minnesota and Dakota Territory. [Howes M58; Graff 2578; Field 979]. This edition has over a hundred additional pages, and 4 more portraits than the 1863 edition. Illustrated with 4 steel plate engravings and 7 woodcuts. "Gen. Sibley, a prominent actor, as will be seen, said to the writer, after a close perusal of the first edition, that is seemed quite a mystery, 'how one, not an eye witness of the events, could detail them so graphically and minutely correct.' - New Preface." Illustrated with maps, portraits.

Owner Thomas Joyce was the regular book appraiser on Home & Garden TV\'s \"The Appraisal Fair\\\" program, on international broadcasts. Thomas Joyce was the co-discoverer of George Washington's personal copy of William Leybourn's 1679 edition of THE COMPLEAT SURVEYOR, from which young Washington learned some of his surveying skills at age 16. The book had vanished for nearly a century until its re-discovery in 2017. It is now back at Mt. Vernon.
