A mixed edition copy of 'The Daltons; or, Three Roads in Life', complete in two volumes with an 1862 Volume 1 copy, and an 1865 sixth edition. Uniformly bound in a half morocco binding with marbled boards. 'The Daltons; or, Three Roads in Life' was first published in 1852 by the prolific Irish-born author, Charles Lever. Incredibly popular with the early Victorian reading public, Lever's stories are renowned for his entertaining and 'rollicking narratives', and his success within the period was often favourably compared with that of his chief rival, Charles Dickens. Throughout his literary career, Levay produced five volumes of essays and short stories, and thirty novels, including the well-known 'Charles O'Malley' (1841) that tells a farcical tale of the Irish Military. Volume 2 is published with an illustrated frontispiece. In half morocco binding with marbled boards. Gild stamped title and embellishment to the spines. Externally, generally smart with rubbing to the spine and extremities. Bumping to the extremities. Tidemarks to front and rear boards of both volumes. More severe tidemarks to the rear of Volume 1. Rubbing to the upper and lower joints of both volumes. Front hinge of Volume 1 is strained, slightly showing chords. Rear hinge of Volume 1 is slightly strained but firm. Front and rear hinge of Volume 2 is split to top and to bottom, but firm. Tidemark to top and bottom of front pastedown, Volume 1 and 2. Mark to top and bottom of fore-edge of front and back free-endpaper, Volume 1 and 2. Internally, generally firmly bound with binding strained in places. Spotting to the first and last few pages of both volumes, but heavier in Volume 1. Generally bright and clean throughout. Both volumes occasionally browned to edges. Pencil to top fore-edge of title page, Volumes 1 and 2. Very small loss to upper fore-edge, page 29 of Volume 1. Crease to upper fore-edge of page 59, Volume 1. Small loss to lower fore-edge of page 59/60 and closed tear to lower fore-edge of page 61/2. Tidemark to fore-edge of page small closed tear to page 317/8. Spotting to top of page 344, Volume 1, not affecting the text. Offsetting from frontispiece to title page of volume 2. Spotting to top of pages 12 and 13, 26 and 27. Small crease to upper gutter, pages 328 to 332, Volume 2. Good
