Uniformly bound in modern grey wrappers. Housed in custom black morocco-backed cloth clamshell case. Occasional spotting, overall clean and crisp. A collection of fifteen sermons delivered before Parliament throughout the English Civil War, with contributions from prominent Church of England clergyman including ejected minister and religious controversialist Matthew Newcomen (d. 1669) and acclaimed preacher Obadiah Sedgwick (1599/1600-1658). The traditional ritual invitation of preachers into Parliament at the beginning of sessions, for thanksgiving and blessing, was reinstated with the assent of Charles I, at the Long Parliament of 1640. Following the flight of the King from the capital and the outbreak of Civil War, these sermons became a tool for the puritan leaders, maintain unity against the common enemy and present a united front against the episcopal status quo and minimise internal ecclesiological differences. Their texts were swiftly translated into print and widely distributed. .

Antiquates Ltd

Antiquates Ltd was established by Tom Lintern-Mole in 2007; we travel far and wide to buy, sell, and advise on rare books and manuscripts.

Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.

We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.

We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
