About This Item
London, New York : Longmans, Green, 1957-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Hardcover, First Edition 1957 Longmans London 304 pages. Very Good, in a VG DJ. Minor shelf/edge wear to green cloth boards with gilt spine titles - two bottom corners lightly bumped. Minor shelf/edge wear an dust soiling to original unclipped DJ - now in mylar. No previous owner markings - all pages are clean and crisp. Traces British newspaper history from the days of the illegal Press, and the battles with Church, Crown and Parliament, to the extraordinary influence on social life in the early eighteenth century; through the bribery and corruption of the rest of that century to the position of respectability and political power which leading newspapers had achieved by the end of the nineteenth century; then into the twentieth century with the rapid development of commercialism and advertising, culminating in the fantastic mass-circulation battles of the twenties and thirties. Intensely dramatic, absorbing as it is instructive. Recommended. LOC SSE-04
