In Dawn , the first of the Xenogenesis Series , later retitled Lilith's Brood , Lilith Iyapo awakens after the destruction of Earth and centuries of sleep aboard a spacecraft piloted by the Oankali. They see humans as intelligent beings but cursed with the fatal flaw of hierarchy, which the cross-breeding will resolve.
