Author was assisted by Harriet Smither, archivist, Texas State Library While attempting to join Texas forces on Salado Creek near San Antonio, Capt. Nicholas Dawson and his men were shot or captured by a Mexican cavalry on Sept. 18th, 1842. The victims were later buried with casualties from the Mier expedition.There are entries from various sources, where ever the compiler found them and including many first hand accounts of participants at the time including the ten who were able to travel that were included with the Perote prisoners. This is the first attempt to give details of these Fayette County men and the battle at Salado Creek.
