About This Item

London: John Murray, 1843. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very Good-. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Bound by Zaehnsdorf. Original cloth from boards and spine bound in at rear. Lthographs and wood engravings by L. Haghe, T. Landseer and S. Williams from paintings by Sir David Wilkie, Edwin Landseer, R.A, Charles Landseer, William Simson and Edward Cooke...several wonderfully hand-colored. Contains the first accurate description of the history, life, and habits of salmon and what is required to capture them. "Next to Walton himself, there's no more engagingly discursive and allusive angling writer in the language. For the feel of fishing, the sense of it, I almost said the taste of it, I know of no other to place beside him. Put me ashore on the desert island and along with The Compleat Angler I'll beg for only one other book and that's Days and Nights of Salmon Fishing in the Tweed ... Scrope did at least as much for salmon fishing as Cotton before him had done for trout" (Gingrich, The Fishing In Print, 117, 130). (Westwood and Satchell, 191). Minor shelf/edge wear, small closed split top of front hinge, bastard title and second frontispiece split at joint and laid in (brittle paper), ownership plate at front pastedown, else tight, bright, and unmarred. Full brown leather binding, gilt lettering and decorative elements, five raise bands, marbled endpages, frontispiece(s), teg; matching slipcase. 8vo. xx, 298pp plus 2pp adverts. Illus. (colored and b/w plates).
