New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1991. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Considered by some a novel, this book considers the possibility of murder where others have only reported death. Small hardcover first edition in black papered boards with black cloth at the spine. Gilt titling to the spine. Front board has the initials "SS" in gilt and a nearly illegible "Memento Mori" decoration pressed in. The back board has the publisher's Borzoi colophon. One colour illustration on a fold-out plate. Other illustrations in b&w sporadically throughout. Includes "A Note on Sources." Binding is tight and square: probably unread. There is a bit of edge wear to the jacket, some light scratching to the front panel, and a tiny corner crease to the rear flap. No ownership markings. A Theodore Zeldin book review is laid in.
Synopsis
Simon Schama is the prize-winning author of seven acclaimed books. An art critic and essayist for The New Yorker , he also writes and presents documentaries for BBC television. He is University Professor of Art History and History at Columbia University and lives outside New York City.
