In all, this is a very smart example of this first edition by Jennie Melville. A detective mystery featuring Charmian Daniels, set in Windsor where the tranquil atmosphere of Chapel Close is disrupted when one of its residents goes missing shortly after discovering the body of a young girl near his home. Meanwhile, strange occurrences begin to be reported at the school where the missing resident and his wife worked, and Pix Prescott has been scaring his classmates with stories of 'double people'. 'Charmian is convinced that Ted Gray holds the key to the mystery of who killed Louise Farmer and why, but until she finds out more about him she is powerless to stop the ripples of violence from spreading still further, powerless to stop another death...'
