A married set of first editions with Volume One bound in brown blindstamped cloth and Volume Two bound in maroon blindstamped cloth. 350 pp; 351-698 pp, index. Vol. I bears armorial bookplate of T. Bigelow Lawrence on front pastedown and has engraved frontispiece of man at desk with books and engraved title page featuring man digging in graveyard. A collection of essays, previously published in the Boston Evening Transcript, which discuss burial and funeral practices of various cultures and eras, his opinions and prejudices about various ethnic groups, criminal justice, Boston society, ghosts, literature, and social history. Gilt titles on spines. Sabin 77004. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
