Dated (1990), signed, and inscribed, "in solidarity," to a former owner by Thiong'o on the half-title. An important collection of essays by the celebrated Kenyan novelist and playwright Ngugi wa Thiong'o (b. 1938), in which he argues persuasively in favor of linguistic decolonization. Thiong'o wrote his early novels in English, a practice he abandoned following the publication of his 1977 novel Petals of Blood, choosing instead to write in the Gikuyu language.
