A deluxe leatherbound Franklin Library edition of the final novel in James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales series. Originally published in 1841, this work features the author's Natty Bumppo character and is set in the frontier of upstate New York in the 1740s. With illustrations by Robert Lo Grippo. An entry in the publisher's 100 Greatest Masterpieces of American Literature series, issued in conjunction with the Bicentennial of the American Revolution. One of an unspecified number in this limited edition. --- Bound in full red bonded leather covers with five raised bands on spine. Spine titling, elaborate decorations to covers and spine, and textblock edges all in bright gilt. Text presented on high-quality papers. Red silk moire endpapers, with matching sewn-in satin ribbon placemarker. Volume lacks a dust jacket (as issued). --- An About-Near Fine copy: bright, newish, and without evidence of having previously been read, but with a hint of scratching to textblock fore-edge gilding. ; Octavo - 8 to 9 in. tall; xi, 514 pages .
