This catalogue was produced to accompany the exhibition of work by the impressionist Edgar Degas (1834-1917) held at the National Gallery of Art, Washingtoton from 12 April to 12 July, 1998. Of all the impressionist painters who sought ways to represent and express the modern world, only Degas was consistently attracted to the world of horses and jockeys. During Degas's youth horse racing had grown to become of the most popular French spectator sports and he was introduced to horses while holidaying in Normandy in 1861. This book discusses in detail the importance of the horse in Degas' work. NB: A heavy book, will require extra shipping charges if to be sent outside UK..
