About This Item
United Kingdom: Grub Street the Basement, 2000. New book, some wear to cover, 216 pages. Denis David had what was termed 'an active war', especially during the Battle for France, and the Battle of Britain, becoming an Ace five times over, predominately flying Hurricanes, the aircraft with which he was most associated. His post war career was equally distinguished and throughout his 30 years in the RAF as a fighter pilot, staff officer, aide and Air Attache, Dennis never lost his nose for a good story or whimsical occurance, in most of which he himself was involved. From Prince Philip to Mikita Khruschev, from Lord Louis Mountbatten to Yuri Andropov, from King Abdullah of Jordan to Ian Smith of Rhodesia, from 'The Father of the RAF' Viscount Trenchard, to airman Bill Pope, not a person is mentioned but there is an individual story of them, or at least, a story recounted in person by them. Throughout, however, the reader will find warmth, respect and admiration for most of the characters, except where their colder personalities led them into darker corners under the influence of Oppressive regimes. Not much has been written about the Hungarian Revolution in 1956. Dennis David's recollections of that time in Hungary as Air Attache fill the gap with tales sad yet inspiring, courageous yet doomed to a tragic end. It was during this uprising that he became known as the Light Blue Pimpernel, secretly helping many to flee the Soviets, and gaining tremendous respect in so doing.. Hard Cover. As New/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
