Group of 23 different hand-written diary notebooks by D&RGRR track engineers, dated 1899 - 1923
DENVER & RIO GRANDE RAILROAD original group of engineers' Office Notebook Diaries, Leadville & Salida, Colorado, dated 1899 through 1923, composed of 23 similar leather-bound and cloth-bound notebook diaries. Dimensions of each notebook diary: 4-3/8 inches by 7 inches; 120 pages each. Overall condition: very good to very good plus; one leather-bound notebook has a separated front hinge. Nearly every notebook diary has information on each page; two are are only partially filled with engineers' notes on the D&RGRR's trackage. Information written in both pencil and in period ink.
Various named track engineers: J. W. Dens; J. G. Gwynn; R. H. Hedenskog; A. M. Long; A. L. Parish; J. E. Evans; W. E. Spencer; Chas. E. Wetherell; and L. E. Metz.
1899 notebook diary contains notes on which rail lines were inspected, planned or being worked on.
June 1, 1899 – June 30, 1901 Office Diary notebook contains inspection notes on rail lines mostly around Leadville mining district and Lake County, Colorado.
July 1, 1901 – August 31, 1902 Office Diary notebook contains information on D&RGRR tracks around Leadville, Minturn, Breckenridge, Granite, etc.
September 1, 1902 – September 30, 1903 Office Diary notebook contains information on rail track to smelters, Salida, Glenwood Springs, etc.
Notebooks continue as such in a consecutive manner, wherein inspections and work on track mileage is noted, damage and repairs reported, new track construction detailed, in various locations along the Colorado Denver & Rio Grande Railroad trackage (Red Cliff, Salida, Buena Vista, Malta, Leadville, etc.
Two notebooks dedicated to "bank widening" for track expansion. These notebooks are more technical than the other 21.
An excellent and unique record of a major railroad's railroad track maintenance and expansion during the years 1899 through and including 1923.
