New York: Dodd Mead & Company, 1941. Rare 1941 updated edition of the popular World War I humor book The author and illustrator were both veterans of World War I, 27th Division (New York.) 8vo size brown clothbound hardcover with darker brown titles on spine and cover. Front cover also has a small illustration; 119 deckle edged pages with some full page black and white illustrations. This volume has been updated with one introductory chapter with a letter from Bill to his son. Description: Who will ever forget "Dere Mable," the letters of that irrepressible, irresistible rookie Bill - who wrote of generals, captains, and sergeants with broad tolerance but obvious disfavor...and now (in this updated edition) Bill is (also) writing to his son, a draftee in the new Defense Army, with the same old spirit and sending him letters for guidance." Lightly sunned spine, bumped top corners, red mark on back cover and small pencilled marks inside front cover. Some page are creased - this is a production issue, not damaged.
