About This Item
London : Newbery and Carnan, 1769 A very good set, complete in 10 volumes. It is profusely illustrated with copper plates of major landmarks and features described on the title pages as 'palaces, castles, cathedrals; the ruins of Roman and Saxon Buildings; and of Abbeys, Monasteries, and other Religious Houses, Besides a Variety of Cuts of Urns, Inscriptions, and other Antiquities.' In contemporary full leather bindings with raised bands to spine, red labels with gilt lettering to spine; gilt volume numbers; and gilt tooling on the side edges of the boards, only visible when the book is laid down on its side. With 240 copper plates as called for, and numerous engravings in the text. The contents are in superb and clean condition. There is some browning to pages opposite the plates because they are not tissue guarded. One volume only (7) has some very slight water damage to the top right corner of the last 14 pages. Volume 10 has a very small wormhole affecting the fep and first few leaves with minimal damage and no loss of text. There are very occasional annotations. All have an ink signature, possibly of Suzanne Roberts, 1854. Some have a worn bookplate of Richard Colchester. The bindings are sound but showing some wear - usually at the top or bottom of the spine; some particularly at the joints, and some rubbing at corners. The leather bindings are very clean and nicely coloured. We can provide a detailed account of each volume on request.

About E C Books
E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
