About This Item

A collection of finely engraved plates illustrating the Regency vogue for neo-Classical dress

29 delicate line engravings showing Empire-style costumes and furnishings, as well as scenes from literature (Alexander Pope's Belinda) and antiquity (Pericles, Pan and Syrinx, Echo and Narcissus)

Henry Moses (1782-1870) was a sought-after engraver who worked for James Barrie, William Opie and Benjamin West. He enjoyed a great reputation for his outline plates, which are distinguished for the purity and correctness of the drawing. Among his other works are A Collection of Vases 1814, Picturesque Views of Ramsgate 1817, Vases from the Collection of Sir Henry Englefield 1819, Sketches of Shipping 1824, Marine Sketch Book 1826, etc.

This collection was also issued under the imprint of at least two other London publishers in 1823 (McLean and Miller).

Leather spine solid, paper boards soiled, bookplate of Walter and Edith Wiggin on front endpaper, hinges repaired, all 29 plates present, but as often, with varying degrees of foxing and spotting.
