In this expanded and revised edition of his famous 1961 book, Hilberg has produced a chilling and absorbing document of interest to the general reader and the scholar. While comprehensive in his approach, Hilberg focuses on the bureaucracy of death, on the administrative structure and functions that implemented the often intentionally euphemistic death orders. He builds on the collating of records, the painstaking recounting of bureaucratic response to the challenges of organizing mass murder, and the detailed account of the "stepping stones" to extermination: the expropriation of Jewish property, the concentration for easier elimination, the mobile killing operations, the deportations, and, finally, the death camp operations. Such a descriptive analysis of genocide, told for the most part in restrained, precise prose, has a devastating cumulative effect. The tension between the detached managerial mind and the intimacy of the killer and the killed that forms the moral core of the book is draining. Here, statistics are moving, bureaucratic action dramatic, memoranda riveting. This edition will not end the controversy that began with the earlier one. Scholars will point out historical events that don't lend themselves to Hilberg's thesis of sequential steps leading to genocide. All readers will find shocking Hilberg's contention that there was virtually no resistance by the Jewish victims because their traditions precluded preparation for the required physical response. Many scholars think such a view (dependent as it seemingly is on Nazi records--the writers of which may have recorded only what they thought their superiors wished to see) simply overlooks the numerous real cases of resistance and is therefore misleading. This new edition, with its ringing defense of the author's controversial views and its reinvigorated prose, is an important addition to Holocaust scholarship. It will be impossible to ignore.
