About This Item
Paris: chez Augustin Courbé, 1649. First Edition. Full Leather. Very Good. 4to (218 x 159mm.). pp.111, [1 blank]. Divided into two sections - Devises Heroiques and Devises Morales, the second with a separate title, containing respectively 26 and 28 half-page copper-engraved emblems or vignettes [total 54], a further engraved vignette to the title page. One vignette depicts bees swarming around a hive, another two hunting dogs have killed a lion, another a pomegranate (?) Page 77 contains one of the few know horological emblems from this date - a two train (?) wall mounted clock. First and last few leaves professionally repaired to the outer edge with Japanese tissue, contemporary or early annotations and scribbling to some pages, but, whilst noticable, these are generally pale and are not that obtrusive. Full modern calf with gilt decoration to the spine, blind ruled fillets to the edges of the boards; binding very good with minimal wear. A very good copy. Pierre Le Moyne was a Jesuit preacher (1602-1671). Very scarce.
