Sir Moses Montefiore (1784-1885), the British banker and Jewish philanthropist, established the first settlement of the New Yishuv in Palestine (he was also notable for his opposition to Reform Judaism); a major figure of modern Jewish history.This is a Very Good Plus set of the First Edition, comprising Two Volumes, 389 pages and 363 pages. Nicely bound in blue cloth with blindstamping in gilt - portrait of the Montefiores on front cover. Decorative endpapers. Clean and fresh text. Mildly bumped with some rubbing to head and foot of spine. There are 3-4 spots on the front panels. An important and scarce title about this major historical figure - widely held by major institutions but scarce in the trade. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good Plus/No Jacket.
