About This Item

New York City, NY: The Other Press, 2011. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: The Other Press, 2011. Hardcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 225 pages. The author's first novel to be translated into English. One of the most brilliant novels of our time. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run by The Other Press as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Michel Laub's "Diario da queda" in a felicitous English translation. "A masterpiece that will break your heart". "At the narrator's elite Jewish school in a posh suburb of Porte Alegre, a cruel prank leaves the only Catholic student there terribly injured. Years later, he relives the episode as he examines the mistakes of his past and struggles for forgiveness. His father, who has Alzheimer's, obsessively records every memory that comes to mind, and his grandfather, who survived Auschwitz, fills notebook after notebook with the false memories of someone desperate to forget. This powerful novel centers on guilt and the complicated legacy of history. Asks provocative questions about what it means to be Jewish in the twenty-first century" (Publisher's blurb). The contrapuntal response to Michel Laub was only recently supplied by Luiz Schwarcz's "The Absent Moon" (2023). An absolute "must-have" title for Michel Laub collectors. This title is a great book. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (American) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are in subsequent printing, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. One of the most brilliant writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO LUIZ SCHWARCZ'S "THE ABSENT MOON" TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1590516516.
