About This Item
Milwaukee: Die Hausfrau, 1931. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Zula Kenyon (cover). Milwaukee: Die Hausfrau, 1931. The March (Marz), 1931 issue of Die Hausfrau, "Monatsschrift fur die Frauenwelt Amerikas" (roughly, Monthly Review for the American Woman"). Text in German. Tall quarto, almost folio, illustrated stapled wraps, 58 pp. Cover is - IMHO - one of the most engaging ever executed by the estimable Zula Kenyon, whose pastels were achieved with her own recipes. Here, she gave us an astonishingly feminine and enchanting female image, a nameless mona lisa who literally raises the concept of 'flapper' to an entirely different level of meaning. See the scan. A color interior illustration, "A Glimpse of Nature's Wonderland", is from a painting by C.A. Mills; deeper inside is some poetry by German writer/poet Paul Heyse (Paul Johann Ludwig von Heyse), and at the front a charming photo of Billie Dove. And much more, of course. Better than Very Good; a closed cut on the back cover, extending into the last few interior pages, is the only salient flaw, else this would be a near fine example. Just moderate toning to the still-quite-supple interior pages; and, in this (rare) case, there is no original subscriber's mailing label printed anywhere. See scans. A nice example, particularly with the elevating Kenyon contribution. Die Hausfrau was published for German-Americans in the mid-20th century, but you don't have to be able to read German to appreciate the covers, the interior color plates in some issues (see above), the craft pages, short fiction (sometimes illustrated), poetry, the frequent geographically whimsical articles, music, ads and the excruciatingly home-y black and white photos in Die Hausfrau. This will take ya back. Well, depending on how old you are...Americana, in German. The cover illustrations are often the equal of - and, in this case, superior to - those on English language magazines of the era that bring much higher prices. Stout collector's condition.
