About This Item

Some age darkening, particularly on back covers. Otherwise, all pages tight, clean and unmarked, no stickers, not ex-library. Very slight tear in dust jacket of Die Normannen. Bear light pencil mark on both covers, Die Letzten Tage bears name in ink of distinguished medievalist Prof. K. M. Setton (1914 - 1995) of the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study.

Either volume available separately for $30.00.

Prof. Endre Von Ivánka (1902-1974) was a German-Hungarian theologian and philologist. He was Professor at the Institute of Greek Philology in Budapest and Professor of Byzantine philology and intellectual history at the University of Graz.

He published the Byzantinische Geschichtsschreiber series of which these two volumes (vols. l and lll of the series) are an abridgement of the respective subject matter.

Die Letzten Tage von Konstantinopel (von Ivákna) is an abridged version of Prof. von Ivánka's translation and explication of the part of the Chronicon Maius attributed to Georges Sphrantzes (1401-1478) dealing with the fall of Constantinople in 1453.

Prof. Herbert Hunger (1914 – 2000) was a distinguished Austrian Byzantinist with a background in philosophy and the classics. He was a prominent member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, serving as its president from 1973 to 19825, and of the University of Vienna.

Die Normannen in Thessalonike is Prof. Hunger's translation, explication and commentary on Bishop Eustathius of Thessalonika's (1115 – c. 1195/6) description of the conquest of Thessaloniki by the Normans in 1185.
